A Society of Victims: Understanding and Preventing the Effects of Domestic Violence Domestic Violence has been an ongoing issue since the beginning of time and for centuries, considered a private family matter. While it may have been noticed, it was rarely addressed and intervention was rarely offered to, or accepted by the victim. With the uprising of feminist movements, domestic violence is now recognized as a serious social issue, with the implications of abuse reaching far past the four walls of the private home (Fritz 8). Affecting not only the battered victim, but the victim’s children, extended family members, friends, and even employers, domestic violence requires the attention and intervention of not only law enforcement agencies, court systems, and departments of child and family services, but of employers and educators as well. Domestic violence, was commonly perceived to be a private matter not requiring intervention. Primarily occurring as violence against women, it is still widely accepted and even encouraged by many cultures around the world, and not considered to be a deviant behavior, legal problem, or moral issue. Depending on culture and geography, women are often viewed as the lesser human, expected to be obedient and respectful to men, and are discouraged from asserting any form of individuality or independence.
